5 on Friday: Reviews

I always love to end my week with a good little round up of random tidbits...I've had a few of these things on my mind, but since I am, by no means, any type of review blogger, I thought I would share my thoughts on the below with you now!

1. Captain Phillips

We don't get to the movies a lot, but we can order them On Demand from the comfort of our couch. However, there are rarely any movies that we want to see! When we saw Captain Phillips, we were pretty psyched, and it didn't disappoint. I was more stressed and tense during the entire thing than I was before giving birth to Cam! I have never been so anxious during a movie! But, that's what made it so good. And the acting...everyone knocked it out of the park.

2. Lone Survivor

We heard SO MANY good things about this movie, that we actually got off our couch, got a babysitter (my mom) and went to the movies. Talk about gory...I had my hands over my hands for quite a few scenes. However, the acting and the reality of this movie just brought a constant stream of tears to my eyes at the end. Holy tear-jerker! I won't ruin it for anyone, but go see it. You will appreciate our country and our troops more than ever.

Whoa, two serious movies...I need a good comedy!! Any recommendations???

3. Cam's New Day Care

Things I love:

  • Emails updating me about his day (I wish I could watch him like Julie does!)
  • The routine/structure: He knows where to put his jacket when we get there, where to get his lunch box when we leave, where to stand while he waits to go outside...
  • Reminders about snack/milk duty
  • Class lists for Valentine's Day
  • The fact that he's going to walk to the high school to deliver me a valentine! Seriously? I might die that day...
Things I don't love:
  • Having to pack his lunch...selfish, I know.
  • They don't open until 7:30 and close at 4:30. Again, selfish...when else can I get errands done?!

4. Our Ford Explorer

Neither Chad nor I thought that we would ever be "Ford owners." Found On Road Dead...that's what I learned growing up! But, we have a friend who owns a Ford dealership, so when we were in the market, we stopped by for a test drive. We ended up taking it home overnight and purchasing it the next day. We've had it for six months now, and I LOVE IT.

Seriously...if you are in the market for an SUV, Ford has totally stepped up their game.

5. LLBean Boots

Being a Mainer, I always saw Bean boots on every single person I ever saw a lot of people, but never owned a pair until this year. I needed a pair of boots to wear with a casual outfit that could also be worn in the snow (like, not my Frye boots from eBay). So, Chad got me a pair for Christmas.

Now, I love them. But I wish I had gotten the insulated pair because they do not keep your feet warm!!! But, they are pretty stylish, and I fit in with all of the high school girls, so it's a win in my book. ;) Haha!

Happy Friday, Friends!

It's the little things...

I am joining Ashley this morning to share one of the "little things" that makes my world go 'round...

This guy. Every morning.

Sometimes, he wakes up at 4:00 and we head to the couch to snooze some more.

Sometimes, he wakes up at 5:30 am and we head to the couch to snooze some more.

Sometimes, I wake up before him and start getting ready. This is my least favorite way to start the day. Despite the grogginess that comes with being woken at 4:00, I am already dreading the time when he stops wanting to cuddle in the morning.

I know it's a bad habit to let him sleep on the couch with me, but I can't help it. (I also want to get more sleep instead of listening to him cry.) I love to start each day with this little guy on my chest/lap...the mornings when I don't get to (like this morning) just feel rushed and unimportant.

It's the little things....

Our Weekend was this...

This past weekend was a weekend of no plans - the best!!

Friday night, we stopped by the local girl's basketball game (where I teach) to watch one of my students play...it was so fun to see her in a different atmosphere and to see her parents!! After, we headed to Longhorn for some heart dinners and beers. :) What else is there to do on a cold winter night?!

our little athlete loves to watch any sport with a "ball!'

Saturday morning, we were up and at 'em nice and early with a yummy breakfast by Chad followed by a haircut for Cam!

sharing his bacon with LouLou

Cam didn't cry for the first time and they used the electric clippers!

Next was a quick trip to our house to see the progress....it's soooooo exciting to see it opened up and actually be able to envision our HOME there!

our living room

our "breakfast nook" - the stairs and wall are coming down, and in its place will be a cozy breakfast nook!

our kitchen...these are the same stairs that will be coming down, so it will be 16' of counter space then our breakfast nook!

Saturday night, we went on a DATE! We went to see Lone Survivor, which had me in full on tears at the end.

Sunday, I was so sick all day. I could. not. stop. sneezing.

Chad always works on Sundays, so Cam and I went to my dad's so he could help take care of Cam. My aunt, uncle and cousin came over for lunch, so it was nice to have some help while I laid on the couch helpless. Ha.

So, my Sunday consisted of snuggles with this guy and some Candy Crush (when I could open my eyes). I finally beat a level I've been playing since before Christmas! #firstworldproblems

he loves seeing himself in the phone!

I hope you all had a great weekend and are having a good week....I am ready for spring and above freezing temps!!

5 on Friday: Our Life Lately

I have been slacking big time on 5 on Friday posts, but I love them so much that I wanted to jump back in. :)

ONE
We are still moving forward on renovating our house. There are no longer walls, just studs. Windows are being removed, the chimney is gone and all of our contractors are in place. Next step: tearing down a part that needs to be rebuilt...sh*t is about to get real!

TWO
My mom turns 50 on Monday, so we threw her a "surprise" party last weekend at a local bowling alley. There were lots of friends, props and cocktails (plus some bowling and food, too).

THREE
Babies, babies, everywhere!! There are so many babies coming into this world right now - Emily just had sweet baby Claire and Jill is just waiting for her two boys to join her and make a family of five any day now! AND, so many people are expecting! Don't even ask me when Baby #2 is coming...it's nowhere on the radar (well, kinda, but not anytime soon)!

FOUR
The girls (Chad's daughters) are coming to visit this summer! They've never been to Maine, and we haven't seen them since we went to Holland last March! We are looking for a lake house to rent that will fit all of us plus Chad's mother, brother, sister-in-law and niece - I can't wait!!

FIVE
Spending Freeze!! We are officially on a spending freeze after my birthday, Christmas then my mom's birthday. We just purchased a sectional and kitchen table for our house, and we don't need to buy anything else for awhile. I want to put away as much savings as we can (and pay down our debt more) before we move into our house because you know there are going to be so many things we will forget about!

How do you handle the expenses in your house? Do you share accounts with your partner? Do you have a spending account and a bills account (We do!)? Do you use cash? I always love to hear other ideas about how to handle your family's finances.

Happy Friday!

#365daysofcameron

I have been holding up pretty well, although some days have been a bit of a stretch to get a good picture...

January 13
My dad has been picking up Cameron from day care on Mondays and Wednesdays so I can work my second job. Of course, all my dad wants to do is rough house with Cam, so he is WOUND UP when he gets home! This night, he would not calm down (until he crashed at 7:30)!

January 14
I always love to peek through the window at day care when I get there so I can watch Cam with the other kids. As soon as he sees me, though, it's over and he's a Stage 5 Clinger.

January 15
Another afternoon with Grandpa...see why he's so wound up?

January 16
Morning drives to school have turned into total jam fests with this little dude...the Sirius station Backspin is our #1 choice. On this particular morning, Lil Kim was on, and so were Cameron's shades. :)

January 17
We have a "January thaw" every year, so last week when temps were above 40, we took full advantage and wagon-ed our way to Walmart. Of course, Cam was like a rockstar and got a smile and coos from every man, woman and child in the place. (It didn't hurt that he was being rolled around like a king!)

January 18
Aren't Saturday mornings with toddlers the best? We usually leave the house to get coffee, breakfast, run errands, etc...but last weekend, we just stayed home. We built a fort for Cam and he was in heaven! He got to wear Daddy's hat and we stayed in our PJs until lunchtime!

January 19
The day the Pats lost the AFC Championship...Cam didn't mind all of the attention from our visitors, but we were quite sad about the game!

January 20
We had monday off for MLK, Jr day, so we cruised around the basement, cleaned, did laundry then visited the Children's Museum. Cameron is totally into cheesing for the camera...our little sweetie pie.

January 21
Did I mention Stage 5 Clinger? Totally...he hates to leave our side!

Happy Friday-Eve, friends!!! We have ZERO plans this weekend, and I can't wait!

Love is in the air....

I always say that I'm not going to get as into "x" holiday because it's silly. Then it gets closer and I dash to find a cute outfit for Cam and some fun gifts (that are usable, too...we are trying to have less stuff).

Like every other holiday, Valentine's Day has crept up on us and is less than a month away!! I know that it's just a "Hallmark" holiday, but it's still fun to celebrate and break up the winter-blues. Who doesn't love a reason to shower your significant other with love and buy fun gifts for your babies?

Valentine's Day 2014

What are some of your Valentine's Day gifts?? I love to hear other people's ideas!

PS Can you believe how little Cam was last year?

Paint Nite Portland

Have you heard of Paint Nite? It's a "new" (to our area) event where you go to a restaurant, order some drinks and create a painting while being coached by an artist. I am the worst artist in the entire world - like, I would shudder if a teacher ever asked us to draw anything - but I somehow painted something half-way decent.

My mom's birthday is coming up, so I asked a couple of her friends to join us and we all had a blast.

Here's a quick slideshow of our evening:

My momma and me...

Blank canvases..the wine had been poured and our imaginations started flowing. Hahaha!

Tada!!!

This is definitely something I want to do again...it would even be fun with couples (even though it was all women this time) or something to do at your house!

This weekend, we are throwing a 50th birthday party for my mom...it was a surprise, but we ended up letting her know to make everything easier. (It's so hard to pull off a surprise party for someone you live with!) I am sure I will have lots of fun pictures to share with you all!

Happy Friday, friends!!

Our newest canvas piece

I have a thing for pictures printed on canvas...I love that you don't have to worry about a frame or matching it to any decor. I move our canvas pieces a lot (the ones that aren't hanging on the walls) depending on mood, holiday decor, etc...

I was contacted by the lovely people at Easy Canvas Prints to review one of their pieces. Seeing that we just had family pictures taken, I jumped on it and ordered immediately.

The ordering was simple (which I can't say for some other companies), and the canvas piece was at my doorstop in under a week.

When I first picked up the package, I thought there was a 40 x 40 piece in there...it was so heavy! Alas, it was the 8 x 10 that I ordered. Why was it so heavy? Because it's amazing quality!!! Some other ones make me fear that they will blow off the wall if I open the window! This one isn't going anywhere. Except everywhere in our house. I've already moved it so I can see it more often. :)

I love, love, love it! I can't wait to move so I can order way more for our entire house. Their prices are great (and they always offer discounts), their ordering is simple, their shipping is lightening fast and their quality is like none other that I've seen.

Do you prefer canvas prints over regular? Go here for 50% off a print or buy one get one free AND FREE SHIPPING! You will not be sorry; I promise!

Our Christmas Vacation: the abridged version

Christmas vacation is like, well, Christmas vacation for teachers. The last day of school is very similar to that last day in June when there's not a care in the world and there's such a buzz in the air full of excitement, anticipation and naps. Lots of naps.

I put together this fun little mix for our ed techs because I appreciate them more than I could ever show. This little trail mix is sort of insulting as a gift, but it turned out so delicious that I think it got the point across.

We finally took Cam to see Santa. He loved it. Every second of it. Until it was time to sit on the lap of Jolly 'Ole Saint Nick.

Christmas was a down-right blast with an 18 month old. Cam realized that there was something inside every package, so he loved helping everyone open their gifts.

My His favorite was his Everywhere Chair. He likes to sit everywhere-but-the-chair.

We dined with these ladies...Chad was a stud that night and treated us to a little restaurant hop around Portland. We visited Petit Jacqueline, Local 188, Boda and finally Pat's Pizza. You can pay all the money in the world for fancy dinners, but there's nothing like some thing crust pizza and a pitcher of beer to end your night. :)

Cam and I played nanny for the day while we watched Jameson. They play so well together and Cam loves to copy everything J does.

Except nap. Cam would not nap. And this was his reaction.

We went to the Children's Museum a few times...

I'm slightly obsessed with Cameron in glasses...

And visited the library on a yucky day...

We had lots of snow and freezing temperatures over vacation, so we were inside. A lot. We discovered Nick, Jr. and I thank the good Lord above every day that we did because it saved my sanity. :)
